During the weekend of January 30th to February 1st 2015, I competed in Kent State University’s second annual Fashion Tech Hackathon. I joined a group of four people to design and develop a fashionable wearable.
We came up with “EmpoweRing”, a piece of jewelry that would let the wearer send a distress signal to emergency contacts if he or she was in danger.
We decided on the name “EmpoweRing” because wearing this ring will provide a sense of empowerment, safety and style.
We chose a ring as our wearable because the ring design would let the user activate the distress signal with one hand. If the signal was triggered on accident, then the ring would vibrate to let the user know it was activated and then the user would have 30 seconds to deactivate the signal via a companion app on their smartphone.
The companion app would house emergency contacts and send the emergency contacts messages with a GPS location when user is in danger.
The role I played was to design the look of the ring – taking into account the technology must fit in the ring and stay fashionable. I also designed the brand and logo design.
In the end, EmpoweRing won “Most Aesthetically Pleasing Design” and “Most Market Ready Product” provided by the Fashion Student Organization at Kent State University.
